Purpose of role

Asbestos has long been used within the construction industry because of its insulating and strengthening properties.

Asbestos is harmful to health and as such owners of property are required to carefully manage the risks to human health that it represents.

Construction using Asbestos boomed between the 1930s and 1970s, and use continued until its use was finally banned in 1999. As a result, there is a large percentage of the UK’s infrastructure which it is believed to have asbestos containing materials.

Containing exposure to Asbestos is vitally important, and one of Pennington Choices core services is Asbestos Surveying and Analysis. In identifying sources of asbestos within a property, plans can then be put in place to allow for safe removal or safe working in avoidance of any sources of asbestos.

Pennington Choices prides itself on its in house development of our Asbestos Team and many of our current team of surveyors originally joined as trainees and have progressed to become fully qualified and dual skilled, allowing them to undertake Asbestos surveys and Air Monitoring.

As a Trainee Asbestos Surveyor/ analyst you will undertake a structured programme of site based learning and instruction from our qualified surveyors.

As part of your qualification programme you will undertake the BOHS P402 qualification (for surveying) and the P403 and P404 qualifications (for air monitoring) within the first six months of employment.

After completion of your training period and becoming fully authorised you will work in the field on client projects in both domestic and commercial properties. As a Pennington Choices Asbestos Surveyor/Analyst you will have the skills and tools to provide excellent and highly effective asbestos survey and analysis services and will be required to deliver of accurate and timely survey reports in accordance with client’s contractual requirements.


Key Accountabilities and responsibilities

The core role would be either client site or office based, and once trained and authorised, you will be undertaking management and refurbishment & demolition surveys, and air monitoring for clients.

Management Survey – A Management Survey is generally referred to as a standard survey. The purpose of this survey is locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in a building.

R&D Survey – Refurbishment & Demolition Survey – A refurbishment / demolition survey is required where the premises, or part of it, need upgrading, refurbishment or demolition.  The survey does not need a record of the condition of asbestos-containing materials (ACM).  A Refurbishment / demolition survey aims to ensure that nobody will be harmed by work on ACM in the premises or equipment.

Air Monitoring –  involves testing the air to measure the level of respirable airborne asbestos fibres in an area during work on asbestos containing materials. Control monitoring is designed to test the effectiveness of control measures while work or removals is undertaken on asbestos containing materials.

You will be based out of either our Bromley office (covering the South) or our Warrington office (covering the North), although there will be an expectation to cover other regions as required. The mix of our survey work is quite diverse, covering domestic and commercial properties from station buildings and shops to hospitals and churches.

Duties and responsibilities of the role will include but will not be limited to the following:

  • To proactively engage in the training and development provided by the company
  • Once trained and authorised, to undertake management and refurbishment & demolition surveys, take bulk samples and provide clearly presented and well written site notes on the tablet. To provide advice to clients ancillary to the survey. Facilitate and oversee removal works where required.
  • To provide asbestos analytical services to clients, including air monitoring, fibre counting and (where so qualified) bulk sample analysis.
  • To be up to date with asbestos legislation, guidance and industry best practice including UKAS accreditation and quality management arrangements.
  • To be up to date with relevant legislation including Health and Safety.
  • To support the business by working flexibly and responsively from the company’s office or from clients sites as required.
  • To take personal responsibility for maintaining technical expertise and an awareness of current issues in the sector.
  • To comply with the company’s quality management arrangements including participating in the quality assurance arrangements and audit programme.
  • To act within the expectations of conduct and attitude of employees in their role as ambassadors of the company.
  • To be proactive to ensure that work is delivered on time by all areas of the business.

Once trained we would provide you with a fully equipped mobile laboratory (van) for your use while on site undertaking either surveys or air monitoring.

· You must possess a current driving licence (max 3 points)
