Deputy Laboratory Manager. Location: Bromley, Kent.
Purpose of role
The ultimate purpose of this role is to ensure the delivery of a high quality and fully compliant laboratory service for our in-house team and external clients. This in turn will support the operational and commercial performance of the asbestos team in delivering our key business objectives and targets and the asbestos service plan objectives and targets.
In conjunction with the Laboratory & Quality Manager and through the effective supervision of both Bromley & Warrington Laboratory teams the job holder will be required to ensure that all client works are being delivered in accordance with contractual requirements and to the required level of quality.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities
The job holder is accountable for the effective delivery of all laboratory and quality assurance services in both locations. This includes:
Laboratory services including in-house laboratory analysis and asbestos sampling
Compliance with all UKAS requirements and other quality standards
Asbestos related training and development for trainees and other laboratory staff
The job holder will directly line-manage the Senior Laboratory Technicians, Laboratory Technicians and Laboratory Trainees.
The job holder will work collaboratively with the other leaders across the business to ensure we have an integrated approach to service delivery, which delivers our key business objectives and targets and our asbestos service plan objectives and targets.
Laboratory Services – the supervision of the laboratories in both locations including all equipment. Laboratory services include air sampling, bulk sampling, fibre counting, bulk identification, asbestos sampling kits, water absorption testing, materials and soil analysis. You will measure and report on productivity levels within the laboratory.
Quality Control – you will ensure we remain consistently and fully up to date with asbestos legislation, guidance and industry best practice. You will support our UKAS accreditation and quality management arrangements. You will embed a culture of attention to detail and high levels of quality in all asbestos related work and embed this with all members of the team.
Auditing – you will support the Laboratory & Quality Manager in completing laboratory technical audits and other audits like testing/measuring equipment and calibration in order to meet requirements of ISO 17025.
Equipment – you will support the Laboratory & Quality Manager with the management of all equipment, PPE, inventory, consumables, waste management and calibration reminders for both laboratories and all other analytical staff members.
Customer Relationship Management – in conjunction with the Operations Manager you will foster positive, productive and long-lasting relationships with each of our clients.
Line Management – you will line manage the Senior Laboratory Technicians, Laboratory Technicians and any Laboratory Trainees. You will provide effective supervision through the line management structure and ensure line management activities are delivered to a

consistently high standard. They may include recruitment, inductions, briefings and staff engagement, people management, people development, H&S, management of resources, managing performance and managing compliance.
Training – you will deliver training programmes and quality assurances programmes internally to Laboratory trainees (P401)
Quality Assurance – you will ensure we undertake required quality assurance checks on all lab analysts (Daily checks /Monthly Quality checks).
Meeting turnaround times – You will make sure that we meet turnaround times of each individual client by prioritising urgent works and leasing with CAD/Report writers.
Growth and Business Development – In conjunction with the Laboratory & Quality Manager you will lead on business development for the laboratory. This will include online research, business case completion etc.
Deputising – You will be deputising Laboratory & Quality Manager in his absence by appropriate decision making, dealing with clients and supervising all laboratory staff members.
