HR essential skills programme
At Pennington Choices, we believe it is important to get the essentials in place to ensure that everyone is on the same level. That’s why all of our leaders, new and old, take the HR essential skills programme to keep them up-to-date and in accordance with current UK Employment Law.
This four-week programme can help you or your delegate gain a deeper understanding of managing your staff conduct, performance, recruitment and the pitfalls of business.
It is recommended that you complete all four sessions to get the most out of the programme, however if you feel that you need a touch-up session in one of the modules, they are each available individually priced per session.
Session 1: Managing grievance, disciplinary and dismissal.
Do you have disgruntled staff and want to improve relationships and build your confidence as a manager? Are you sick of dealing with conflict and looking for more win-win situations ?
Does the behaviour and conduct of staff fall below your expectations ? Do you want to ensure staff know what the required standards are, drive improvements and clearly understand how you can address issues in a fair and equitable way up to and including dismissal?
This session will help you to effectively handle and resolve any grievances and concerns that you have around conduct in a fair and consistent manner without falling foul of employment law. The course will include :
- What the law requires
- Is it a grumble or a grievance
- Understanding and applying procedures
- Misconduct and gross misconduct
- Conducting investigations
- Conducting Hearings
- Natural justice
- The right to be accompanied
- Fair dismissal and dismissal procedures
- Unfair, wrongful and constructive dismissal,
- Termination payments
- Right to appeal
Session 2: Managing poor performance and sickness.
Have you got poor performing staff that you need to manage ? Do you need to get to the root cause of what is underlying the shortfall in performance? Do you need clarity on the action you can take to boost performance and turn this around or manage this in a clear, fair and reasonable way up to dismissal?
Is high frequent short term sickness absence crippling your business in terms of productivity, cost and staff morale ? Do you need to know how you can positively support employees that have a genuine long term health condition or disability to improve their attendance? Are you lacking confidence in how to address sickness in a robust, fair, viable way so that overall attendance improves?
This session will help you to effectively handle performance and sickness absence issues in a fair and consistent manner. The course will include :
- Why manage sickness - the costs and benefits
- Absence reporting procedures and certification
- Return to work interviews
- Setting the standards - triggers
- Managing persistent short term sickness
- Managing long term sickness absence
- Reasonable adjustments
Session 3: Recruitment and selection.
Are you struggling to fill vacancies and to attract and recruit the right person, with the right skills at the right time ? Do applicants drop out part way through your recruitment process and leave after a short time ? Have candidates left poor feedback on your recruitment practice ? Do you want to improve first impressions of your company and manage the process in a more robust, effective, fair and equitable way ?
This session will help you to manage the recruitment and selection process and recruit the best candidates. The course will include :
- The cost of poor recruitment
- Getting the job descriptions and person specifications right
- Casting the net - advertising far and wide
- Selection methods and their validity
- Interview questions, techniques and skills
- Making an offer
- Candidate feedback
- Safer recruitment - getting the pre-employment checks right
Session 4: Avoid the pitfalls the 3 R's - redundancy, restructure and reorganisation.
Is your organisation going through a period of exponential growth, modernisation and change? do you need to rapidly introduce changes to your working practices, roles and staffing structures ? Do your staff fear change and need you to keep them motivated throughout the process to bring them along on the journey with you ? Are you confident that you understand your legal responsibilities and how to manage this in a fair consistent and reasonable way ?
This session will help you to manage redundancy, restructure and re-organisation confidently. The course will include :
- Managing redundancy - what the law says and avoiding unfair dismissal
- The selection process - the criteria for defining whose in the pool
- Finding suitable alternative employment
- The duty to inform and consult during change
- Varying contracts of employment
- When does TUPE apply

Mark is the Managing Director of Pennington Choices and its subsidiary Auburn Ainsley, a company he set up in 2000 to take a multi-disciplinary approach to property related services nationally to the public and private sectors.
Mark has 28 years’ experience of providing services to local authorities and social landlords and six years’ experience as an employee within local authorities and housing associations. In addition Mark is currently a non-executive director of the trading subsidiary of Warrington Disability Partnership and has previously been a housing association board member.
Mark leads on the development of Pennington Choices as a business, with a strong focus on championing our approach to being a great place to work so that we can recruit and retain the very best people talent so we can deliver exceptional outcomes for our clients. Leading our growth agenda, listening and understanding clients and their needs while helping colleagues to develop, progress and become the best version of themselves possible makes up the core of Mark’s role. Mark has a strong consultancy pedigree and as such spends some of his time working as part of our consultancy team, providing help to clients around subjects such as housing finance, option appraisals, development, organisational strategy, leadership and change management.
